02How AI detection works
No magic. No fingerprinting.
Just the Referer header.
When a visitor clicks your link in ChatGPT, their browser sends a Referer header. We match the hostname, tag the visit, and show it to you. That's the whole algorithm.
Someone reads an AI answer that cites your site
They click through to read more. Browser begins a standard HTTP navigation.
The request carries the source hostname
Standard browser behaviour. No cookies, no extra scripts, no cross-origin tricks.
Tagged with the engine name, not the raw URL
Only the engine label is stored. The full Referer URL is discarded immediately.
Honest caveat:Some AI clients strip the Referer — those visits show as “Direct” instead. We label uncertainty rather than guessing.

Will it slow down my website?
